UL 9540A 82L Pressure Vessel

Pressure Vessel for Battery Abuse Test

Compliance

UL 9540A, IEC 62133, UL 1642, IEC 62619, IEC 62660

If thermal runaway occurs in a lithium battery, the battery material will undergo a series of chemical reactions, generating a large amount of heat and flammable and toxic gases, resulting in the explosion of the battery due to a rapid increase in internal temperature and pressure, followed by the leakage of flammable gases, which will cause violent combustion when encountering external air at high temperatures, forming a jet fire or an explosive fireball, thus causing the loss of control of other surrounding monomers and triggering safety accidents. This can lead to a safety accident. The charge state, service time, and material system of the battery can all lead to changes in the composition of the gas produced by the battery, which can affect its combustion and explosion characteristics and the risk of thermal runaway.

Pressure Vessel for Battery Abuse Test

Pressure Vessel for Battery Abuse Test

The Pressure Vessel for Battery Abuse Test provides a safe container in which the tested cells can be thermally runaway in a reproducible way while analyzing the conditions of thermal runaway and the changes in temperature and pressure during the thermal runaway process.

The Pressure Vessel consists of an explosion-resistant pressure vessel, a thermal runaway trigger system, a temperature measurement system, and a pressure measurement system, which can trigger thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries by heating, short-circuiting, overcharging, and over-discharging in the vessel.

At the same time, it can measure the temperature of the surface of the battery thermal runaway cell, the opening temperature of the gas valve, the voltage change and the pressure change inside the chamber, and display the test data and curve. The test device is designed with a gas collection port for sampling the gas generated by the thermal runaway of the battery cell and using gas chromatography for composition analysis.

The pressure vessel for battery abuse test is suitable for use in laboratories or research institutes to determine the thermal runaway conditions of lithium-ion batteries, battery safety tests, subsequent extended tests such as composition analysis, lower flammable limit (LFL), upper flammability limit (UFL), explosion pressure test, etc.

The Pressure Vessel consists of

  • Pressure vessel, anti-corrosion steel made, with an internal volume of 82 liters.

  • The pressure vessel can withstand a maximum of 3MPa (435 PSI) explosion pressure while configured with an explosion relief valve for safety.

  • The explosion relief valve for automatic relief exceeds pressure when reaching 80% of the maximum limits.

  • Equipped with a sampling port for gas sampling, with a ball valve to control the opening/close.

  • With a sampling gas filtering device at the outlet, a filtering rate not less than 0.5 microns;

  • Vessel door lock device, if the vessel has internal pressure, the door can not be opened to protect the operator.

  • With observation window on the test vessel.

  • Atmospheric gas replenishment device to replenish the chamber with specific atmospheric gas (normally N2).

  • A thermal runaway trigger system, which can set thermal runaway conditions such as heating film, short circuit, overcharge, and discharge.

  • The heating element can heat at a specific rate up to 200°C, with an adjustable heating rate of 4 to 7°C per min.

  • With a vacuum pump, the capacity is not less than 2 liters per min.

  • Up to 8 simultaneous temperature data acquisition circuits, with a resolution of 0.1°C.

  • The temperature measurement system, which measures temperature changes within the chamber and can measure temperature changes at specific locations on the test vessel.

  • Dual pressure transducers for low and high range pressure measurement.

  • Lower pressure transducer, with a measuring range of -0.1 to 1.0MPa, an accuracy of ± 0.5%.

  • Equip with protection device to protect lower pressure transducer when the pressure is over range.

  • Higher pressure transducer, with a measuring range of 0 to 3.0 MPa, an accuracy of ± 0.5%.

  • Data acquisition system: temperature: 8 channels, voltage: 2 channels, pressure: 2 channels, sampling frequency: 10 Hz, time, resolution of 1 sec.
