ASTM E918 Flammability Limit Test

ASTM E918 Flammability Limit Test

Compliance

ASTM E918, ASTM E2079, EN 1839

The Flammability Limit Test Chamber, in accordance with ASTM E918, is used to determine the lower and upper concentration limits of flammability of combustible vapor-oxidant mixtures at temperatures up to 200°C and initial pressures up to 1.38 MPa (200 psia).

A proportion of the test premixed gas is introduced into a steel pressure vessel at a controlled temperature and pressure, and an ignition wire is used to try to ignite the mixture and to determine if the gas is ignited from the resulting pressure change. The flammability limits of the gas are confirmed by varying the concentration of different gases, including the Lower Flammable Limit (LFL) and Upper FLammable Limit (UFL).

Schematic of High Temperature Explosion Chamber

Explosion Chamber Schematic

The Explosion Chamber consists of

  • The internal volume of the chamber is 8L, cylindrical construction, made of corrosion-resistant SUS316 stainless steel, and equipped with a pressure relief valve device.

  • Maximum withstands pressure up to 3mpa, constant withstand pressure not less than 1.5mpa.

  • Heating system for explosion chamber, capacity up to 200 degrees, temperature control accuracy of 0.1 degrees.

  • Water-cooled magnetically coupled stirrer with double-layered stirrer, anchor stirrer on the bottom and three-bladed stirrer on the top. Made of SUS316 stainless steel.

  • Direct filling synthetically replicated gas and mixing in the explosion chamber.

  • Equips with a pressure relief port device and a special solenoid valve for gas distribution, with a solenoid valve with a pressure resistance of not less than 3mpa and a response speed of not less than 10ms, and a pressure relief valve with a specification of 0.5mpa.

  • Ignition system, equipped with 2 ignition needles and an ignition transformer of 13 to 15 kV.

  • Temperature measurement system, OMEGA K type insulated thermocouples, diameter in 1.6mm.

  • Data acquisition system, collects the data of pressure, temperature, explosion pressure, pressure raising rate, etc.
